High school students will get a chance to "speed meet scientists" in 10 minute sessions during a one-day event at QUT's Gardens Point campus this Friday (May 29).

QUT will host 163 secondary students and 45 science teachers from Queensland rural, regional and metropolitan schools for the Wonder of Extreme Science event.

The Wonder of Science program builds passion and enthusiasm for science and technology in Queensland's young people.

They will be involved in workshops including wind power, engineering, sustainable housing and extreme science.

Nobel Laureate Professor Brian Schmidt will launch the event with presentations from Professor Bronwyn Harch and Professor Les Dawes.

Professor Harch said the event was designed to attract and retain students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) degrees to support Australian demand for STEM skills.

"These events reinforce QUT's commitment to increasing the STEM disciplines amongst school-aged students to uptake university studies and enter careers that will drive economic, social and environmental outcomes now and in the future," she said.
