Keep creative control and don't compromise your artistic vision. That's the advice from filmmaker David Lynch that will stay with 30 QUT students and horror movie expert Dr Mark Ryan after they took part in an invitation-only masterclass in Brisbane.
The masterclass coincided with Lynch's first visit to Australia and the opening of a new exhibition of his work at the Gallery of Modern Art, David Lynch: Between Two Worlds.
The eccentric American filmmaker is best known for dark films such as Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, and the 1990s cult TV show Twin Peaks, and is also a respected painter.
Dr Ryan, a QUT lecturer and researcher, and 30 QUT Creative Industries students studying film, screen and animation, and interactive and visual design were invited to the hour-long masterclass at GOMA on March 14.
The event aimed to provide students, artists, filmmakers and related professionals with insights into Lynch's studio process and practical advice for working with difference media.
But Dr Ryan said the main message that the group took home centred around creative control.
"He strongly believes that filmmakers should always keep creative control and control their final cut," he said.
"Never let the business side of filmmaking or producers compromise your artistic vision and the creativity of your film."
