QUT brought its biggest and best teams to the Australian University Games at the Gold Coast this year blitzing both men's and women's volleyball competitions, winning gold.

Gold-winning performances were made in the pool with the men’s water polo and it was no less a fierce match for QUT's lawn bowlers to take gold.

Colourful in their orange markings the QUT Tigers on Tour team finished eighth against 42 tertiary institutions across Australia after fielding 485 students to compete in 27 different sports.

The team took home four golds, four silvers and four bronze.

Keeping tabs on the winners was made easy with social media with a highlights video produced by QUT’s Journalism & Media Society informing the community and using the #tigersontour hashtag.

The coverage showed more than 4,000 daily views via Facebook.

The team included 66 athletes who are part of the university’s elite athletes program.

Sports they competed in included athletics, baseball, cycling, futsal, football, handball, lawn bowls, hockey, netball, rugby 7s, softball, swimming, T20 cricket, taekwondo, touch, volleyball and water polo.

The inclusion of the elite athletes also enabled QUT to compete in sports not previously entered such as rowing, badminton, golf and sailing.

Australia University Sport is implementing a new national sport program which changes the qualification process for events which involves the introduction of a divisional structure.

The results from the 2017 Australian University Games will be used to rank all universities into division 1 or Division 2 for 2018.
