New class of medical robotics to make keyhole surgery safer: QUT is spearheading the development of a new class of medical robotics that can see soft tissue, to make keyhole surgeries simpler, safer and cheaper.

Distracted? Slowing down, not a safe option:  Drivers who slow down while using mobile phones have the potential to increase on-road conflicts, a new QUT study warns.

Australian researchers map the way to a cancer-free future: Health experts have launched an Australian-first research study to understand national patterns in cancer incidence, survival and screening practices based on where people live.

New program launched to fast track medicines to market: A new program focused on translating cutting-edge Australian health research into the marketplace has been launched by QUT and the Medical Technologies and Pharmaceutical Growth Centre (MTPConnect).

Barcaldine student awarded Rural Bank scholarship: Barcaldine student Rhiannon Bennett has been selected as one of nine Rural Bank Scholarship recipients who will receive financial support to the value of $5,000, to help fund her degree in Behavioural Science at QUT.

Good fellows: UK Higher Education Academy CEO meets Australian fellows at QUT: Learning and teaching tertiary experts from Queensland and Canberra have met at QUT in Brisbane to gain some global insights from Professor Stephanie Marshall, the CEO of the UK-based Higher Education Academy.

- The Courier-Mail reported on a project between the Cancer Council and QUT’s Distinguished Professor Kerrie Mengersen (pictured) to map national patterns of cancer incidence. The story also ran across the News Corp network, Channel 9Channel 10 and on 4ZZZ.
Campus Morning Mail, Get Healthier and Health Times reported a QUT project to develop medical robotics that can see soft tissue had been granted nearly $1 million from the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund.
- The Daily TelegraphHerald Sun and other News Corp titles published a piece by Professor Erica McWilliam on schools and gender stereotypes.
Professor Jonathan Roberts explained to Cosmos Magazine why integrating driverless cars into society will be difficult.
- Research from Oscar Oviedo-Trespalacios on drivers who slow down while using mobile phones was covered by AutotalkScience Daily USA, the Townsville Bulletin, Queensland TimesToowoomba Chronical and 4CA.
Geraldine Donoghue was on Nine’s Today Show talking about happy retirees.
The Age (and other Fairfax titles) ran a stylish feature on QUT drama and psychology graduate Adrienne Pickering who stars as Eileen Bond in an upcoming TV miniseries House of Bond.
The Australian featured research on koalas’ mating calls that involves sound recordings being analysed by a QUT acoustics team headed by Professor Paul Roe.
The Australian also covered NHMRC chief executive Professor Anne Kelso’s talk at this month’s Times Higher Education Young Universities Summit at QUT.
- In other Summit coverage, Professor Timothy Tong’s address was on the front page of English-language paper The Seoul Times and Professor Carla Brodley’s address was in in Publicnow.
Professor Nicolas Suzor talked to The Daily Telegraph about piracy laws and site blocking, with the story also run by The Courier-Mail and Herald Sun.
The Courier-Mail’s Qweekend profiled QUT journalism graduate and ABC broadcaster Craig Zonka.
- QUT graduate, Studio 10 co-host and Logie Awards nominee Sarah Harris told Brisbane News about her career journey. The story also ran on News.com.au.
Brisbane News also profiled advertising graduate Ellen Powell who is the creative director of Blushing Confetti and has her products stocked in New York and the UK.
Associate Professor Wendy Scaife spoke to ABC North Coast NSW about philanthropic donations after natural disasters. ProBono Australia also interviewed her.
Associate Professor Gary Mortimer talked to Melbourne’s 3AW and Perth’s 6PR about Woolworths adopting ‘round number’ pricing, with the interviews also picked up by other stations. He was also interviewed by Nine News about Easter shopping.
ABC Radio Brisbane shared CARRS-Q’s ‘text driving’ research with listeners.
- The Noosa News wrote about Indonesian fashion designers and officials visiting Noosa and Brisbane as part of a training course hosted by QUT Creative Industries.

Brisbane Times’ Campus section ran a story by journalism student Jessica McGrath on being flu aware that also highlighted QUT’s staff vaccination program.
Stock and Land reported that nine Australian students had been awarded a Rural Bank scholarship including QUT psychology student Rhiannon Bennett.
South-East Advertiser and Redcliffe and Bayside Herald featured stories about QUT students who received a scholarship from The Smith Family.
All Daily News ran Higher Education Academy CEO Professor Stephanie Marshall’s visit to QUT that attracted learning and teaching experts from Queensland and Canberra.
OK!Magazine featured Professor Robert Schweitzer’s research looking at people emotional experience after sex.
Lawyers’ Weekly covered a new Shimizu Kokusai internship program that involves QUT students.
