11th April 2017

Learning and teaching tertiary experts from Queensland and Canberra will meet at QUT in Brisbane this evening (April 11) to gain some global insights from Professor Stephanie Marshall, the CEO of the UK-based Higher Education Academy.

The HEA Fellowship Forum will also celebrate the rapid growth of the fellowship community in Australasia, which now includes more than 300 HEA Fellows at QUT. The HEA has also recently made QUT a Global Strategic Partner.

Professor Marshall’s talk will provide an international perspective on rewarding and recognising teaching excellence.

The event has attracted around 100 HEA Fellows from QUT and learning and teaching executives from QUT, Australian National University, University of Queensland, Bond University, Griffith University and the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Professor Abby Cathcart, the head of QUT’s Academy of Learning and Teaching and a HEA Principal Fellow, said HEA Fellows ranged from early-career academics and PhD students, to experienced academics and professional staff in learning support roles.

She said the fellowship process involved “rigorous review” of candidates to meet the UK Professional Standards Framework, a benchmark used to evidence effective teaching and learning support practices.

“The fact that 300 of our staff have achieved international recognition is testament to the high-quality teaching, innovative practice, and deep concern for students’ learning at QUT,” Professor Cathcart said.

Professor Marshall also attended The Times Higher Education (THE) 2017 Young Universities Summit at QUT last week, where QUT was named the best young university in Queensland and ranked 24th in the world in the 2017 THE Young University Rankings.

On Monday she also attended a roundtable on Monday with QUT senior teaching and learning staff including Professor Tania Broadley (Assistant Dean (Learning and Teaching), Faculty of Education), Professor Suzi Derbyshire (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Learning and Teaching), and QUT’s Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Carol Dickenson.
