New QUT engineering student Josh Pain has started uni life with an amazing O Week experience, moving into an ‘igloo’ and a clear aim to one day shape the future.

Josh moved from Mackay to Brisbane this month to start his Bachelor of Engineering after being awarded a QUT Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship – a prestigious award based on academic merit that helps fund students’ university journeys.

He’s studying at the Gardens Point campus and is living 400 metres down the road at the Iglu student accommodation in Mary Street.

“O Week has been an amazing experience,” he said.

“I’ve already joined a handful of clubs and I can’t wait to get more involved as the year goes on. Uni seems like a great adventure. The people, facilities and programs all seem incredibly interesting and beneficial.

“I am already quite baffled by what I’ve seen so far and I just can’t wait to experience and find out more!”

Josh, who graduated from Mackay North State High School with an OP 2, said it had been an “absolute honour” to receive a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship.

“To me, it means I should strive to achieve the best results I can and make the most of uni,” he said.

“Receiving one of these scholarships entitles me to many opportunities to better myself and achieve well.  As a VC Scholar I believe I should make the most of everything I am fortunate enough to have thrown my way.”

Josh said he would see how his first year went but hopes to major in either medical or aeronautical engineering next year.

“Engineering is something I’ve always been fond of because of its immense diversity,” he said.

“It feels like you can go almost anywhere and do almost anything with this degree.

“Also, I’ve always admired the way engineers continuously influence the world we live in. Regardless of my major, I would love to work somewhere I can contribute to shaping the future. It would just be amazing to be able to say that I had worked on a project that went on to impact people’s lives and advance the world.”
