QUT creative talent is on the frontline of the 2017 Brisbane Street Arts Festival. In this article, Grace Kirk from the Creative Industries Faculty's online magazine, No Walls, explores some of the QUT connections:

Spanning more than 20 locations and featuring an extensive line up of artists, the 2017 Brisbane Street Arts Festival (BSAF) has a lot on offer, including workshops, public art installations and more. A particularly exciting aspect of the program is the QUT ReForm: Art in Public Spaces exhibition, which takes place from February 20 to March 3 at the QUT Creative Industries Precinct.

No Walls caught up with visual artist Jordan Azcune, whose installation Meaningless Surrender will be featured as part of ReForm. It was at the site of the installation where I met Azcune to discuss his creative process and practice. We ended up spending time discussing how art can be disposable, taking photos of chairs and watching videos of artistic gymnasts.

An Installation that Transforms

As part of ReForm, Azcune will explore the nature of surrender and the avenues of empowerment, through an installation that is transformative. The installation made up of white flags will be a symbol of surrender during the first week of ReForm, and that of empowerment during the second week, when he will take to them with spray cans and oil paint.

After recently finishing his honours in visual art at QUT, Azcune is now living what he describes as the Bohemian dream – working at a bottle shop, applying for artist residencies and, most importantly, making art.

Azcune attributes his inspiration for the ReForm installation to his external environment. Specifically, his situation as a recent graduate of fine arts, who is feeling the pressures of our current socio-economic environment to surrender into a more mainstream occupation.
