QUT is conducting a survey of people in South East Qld affected by the 2010-2011 floods   

 

How were you affected? QUT study into lasting impact of 2011 Qld floods: The 2010-2011 Queensland floods had a devastating impact which resulted in 78 per cent of the state being declared a disaster zone and the death of 35 people.

Brief break will be a life-saver on the roads: Drivers have been warned taking breaks from behind the wheel is essential to save lives.

Unpaid work experience rife in Australia – report: Unpaid work experience is widespread in Australia, with more than half of young adults having undertaken an unpaid placement, according to research conducted for the Federal Government’s Department of Employment.

Associate Professor Paula McDonald

- Research from Professor Paula McDonald (pictured) and colleagues at UTS and the University of Adelaide that found unpaid work was rife in Australia received widespread coverage including on the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald and across the Fairfax network, ABC Online, Triple J, AAP and SBS.

- The researchers also wrote a piece for The Conversation that was republished by The Guardian, Smart Company, Arts Hub and Pro Bono Australia.

- Nature Index published a comment piece by Associate Professor Adrian Barnett on the cost and delays from applying for ethics approval.

- Brisbane Times asked Professor Clive Bean what to expect from Queensland politics in 2017.

- Professor Gerry Fitzgerald was interviewed for 4BC Drive and ABC Radio Brisbane about a research project to assess the ongoing health impacts of the 2011 Queensland floods. The call for people to complete a survey was also covered by APN newspapers including the Toowoomba Chronicle.

- Associate Professor Gene Moyle (pictured) spoke to Dance Australia about how dancers can recover from performance and injury setbacks.

- Brett Lewis’ world-first coral bleaching videos and comments made it into Scientific American.

- Stephen Whyte and Professor Benno Torgler’s online dating research continued to make international headlines including in RapplerMetro, The Journal, The Tribune and EenaduIndia.

- Startup Smart and Deal Street Asia ran stories on QUT’s Creative Enterprise Australia (CEA) receiving $200,000 in Queensland Government startup funding.

- Dr Amanda Mergler’s comments on outdated school uniforms for girls were republished by Parent24 and Kenya’s The Star.

- Susan Hetherington discussed a range of family matters during her regular segment with ABC Capricornia.

- Professor Brian McNair’s Conversation article about the rise of pollie-pundits was republished by the Daily Bulletin and Econo Times.

- Queensland Country Life featured a story about QUT-developed infrared weed spot spray technology being trialled by a farmer in Dalby.

- The Northern Star reported on Creative Industries Faculty grad Adric Watson’s Flickerfest award for his work on short film In a Cane Field.

- Associate Professor Gary Mortimer (pictured) spoke to A Current Affair about what impact the arrival of a new managing director at Woolworths would have on shopping prices. He also spoke to 6PR about Bega Cheese’s acquisition of Kraft brands including vegemite, and ABC Radio Sydney about airport food prices.

- And Professor Mortimer’s piece for The Conversation on why Australian supermarkets continue to look to the UK for leadership was republished by Business Standard, Inside Retail and Smart Company.

- Nursing graduate Alysha Coulson spoke to Redland City Bulletin about her journey to graduation.

- Professor Kerry Carrington told ABC Wide Bay and ABC Tropical North there is overcrowding in prisons across Queensland.

- Professor Robert Schweitzer’s research into post-coital dysphoria was mentioned in a Mamamia article.

- OP1 student Bridget McCarron told The Toowoomba Chronicle she was looking forward to studying medical imaging at QUT.

- ABC radio Southern Queensland asked Associate Professor Wendy Scaife about the evolution of philanthropy in Australia.

- The GLASS: art design architecture exhibition at QUT Art Gallery was written up in Brisbane News.

- Dr Mary Crawford discussed the issues of the day on her regular ‘party games’ segment on ABC Radio Brisbane.

- The Ballina Shire Advocate wrote about Xavier Catholic College students including Zach Flannery who hopes to study Engineering and Business at QUT.

- Time Out Brisbane ran a piece on the Brisbane Street Arts Festival ReForm which will be held at QUT’s Creative Industries Precinct on 20 February.

- Optometry student Gregory Hindmarsh (pictured) told Optometry Australia about his experience at QUT Health Clinics’ back-to-school health checks.

- The South-East Advertiser reported on Executive MBA student Chris Veraa’s start-up BizDraw, which helps companies display complex ideas through visual aids and stories.

- The Canberra Times reported on fashion designer Alice Sutton heading to South Korea under a joint QUT and Seoul National University program.

- Professor Axel Bruns was quoted warning of the risks of a badly conceived tweet, for an article about politicians using Twitter that ran across the News Corp network.

- The Gympie Times reported Gympie State High School students Jamie-Lee Griffiths and Alex Lobegeier were coming to QUT after receiving Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships.

- Victoria’s Midland Express ran a story about QUT’s participation in an Australian-first study into end of life law.
