CARRS-Q to support Australia’s largest intelligent vehicle trial: QUT’s Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland (CARRS-Q) will take part in the largest on-road testing trial in Australia of connected vehicles.

QUT tests new tech for driving/cycling overtaking rule: A QUT-led bid to test and measure the distance between bicycles and cars travelling on Queensland roads has won a State Government tender.

Strange bedfellows: dangerous link between driver distraction and sleepiness: Driver distraction combined with sleepiness creates a perfect storm when young people get behind the wheel, warns QUT road safety researcher Dr Chris Watling.

Research ramps up at QUT Creative Industries: QUT’s strengths in Arts, Media and Design research have been boosted with the consolidation of three research centres within the Creative Industries Faculty.

QUT academics named 2016 AMP Tomorrow Makers: Two QUT academics – a roboticist and a film lecturer - are among 53 Australian awarded a share in the 2016 AMP Tomorrow Fund, a $1 million grants program to support individuals working on projects to benefit the community.
 

FIRST LEGO League: Everything is awesome at Caboolture!: The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) arrived at Caboolture on the weekend, with QUT hosting a record 40 teams from 24 schools across the Moreton Bay region and beyond.

Showcase events celebrate creative and design practice: QUT Creative Industries graduates are celebrating the end of their studies with a series of showcase events.

- The launch (pictured) of the Herston Biofabrication Institute, led by Associate Professor Mia Woodruff, continued to receive coverage from media including 7 News, 9 News, 10 News, The Project, AAP, 4BC Radio, Gizmodo, Internet Medicine, and 3D Printing Industry. Prof Woodruff also made the cover of The Courier-Mail's QWeekend magazine for a story about biofabrication and the new institute.
- QUT’s internationally renowned UAV Challenge, run by Professor Jonathan Roberts and his team, aired on BBC Click, attracting more than 200 million viewers.
- Dr Matthew Dunbabin and Dr Feras Dayoub’s Google Impact Challenge win featured on the Today Show.
- Professor Narelle Haworth interviewed by 7 News about a technology trial to test the distance between cyclists and drivers. The story also ran on Brisbane Times.
- The Queensland Times and the Brisbane Times ran a story about the trial of 500 driverless cars that will happen in Ipswich and involves QUT’s CARRS-Q.
- The announcement at QUT’s biofutures pilot plant of a $5 million development fund for the biofutures industry was reported by Bundaberg’s News Mail.
- 7 News ran a story on the flat-pack tiny house (pictured) on show at the Healthy Housing Conference at QUT.

   

- Professor Lindy Willmott spoke to ABC’s World Today about doctors’ right to opt out of assisting patients to die.
- Associate Professor Gary Mortimer was interviewed by 9 News about Queensland retailers adopting the US's 'Black Friday' in an attempt to propel pre-Christmas sales. He also told the International Business Times online shopping was a tough market for supermarkets like AmazonFresh to crack in Australia, and told Smart Company presents would still be under the Christmas tree despite an increasing demand for ‘experiences’.
- The Sunshine Coast Daily, 7 News (Sunshine Coast), MIX 92.7FM and ABC News previewed the Woodford Folk Festival and the giant puppets brought to life by George Meijer’s QUT drama students.
- Professor Dr John Scott told The Courier-Mail the vast majority of relationships initiated online could be viewed as a ‘fast-food’ version of a relationship and did not involve violence.
- Professor Sagadevan Mundree spoke to ABC’s The Country Hour (in 44 min 45 secs) and the Bowen Independent from the AgFutures conference about the opportunities for tropical pulses.
- QUT’s rollercoaster expert Malcolm Burt spoke to news.com.au about the proposal of a new Gold Coast theme park from China’s biggest theme park operator, Songcheng.
- Dr Alice Payne and Dean Brough (pictured) wrote a Conversation article about their research into vegan leather, which was republished by Daily Bulletin and prompted an ABC Brisbane interview.
- QUT fashion lecturer Icaro Ibanez-Arricivita told The Sunday Mail about the QUT fashion graduation show.
- Dr Ian Renshaw spoke to The Australian about his son Matt’s batting traits after his performance in the Australian test side’s win over South Africa.
- Dr Mary Crawford from the QUT Business School was interviewed on ABC Brisbane Mornings about Australian and US politics.
- Professor Peter Corke spoke to The Guardian about how technology could change the future of work.
- Adjunct Professor Sebastian Chase’s induction as an ARIA Industry Icon was reported in The Music.
- The Daily Mercury, Bundaberg News Mail and Fraser Coast Chronicle published research by Dr Alexia Lennon on learner drivers taking advice from their parents.
- Motorbike Writer reported on the Iris camera-helmet devised by QUT mechanical engineering student Jack Swan.
- AutoTalk and ScienceNewsline published a story about Dr Chris Watling’s research into driver distraction, sleepiness and young drivers creating the perfect storm on our roads.
- Professor Margaret Petty points out some of the pitfalls to Atlanta’s plan to create its own Times Square in City Lab.
- Dr Christine Satchell featured throughout the Quest newspaper network talking about social media savvy seniors.
- Associate Professor Janet Davies spoke with 612 ABC Brisbane about a severe thunderstorm in Melbourne causing a surge in asthma cases and how a similar event could occur in Queensland.

- City North News featured a story on Creative Industries academic Sarah Holland-Batt (pictured) winning the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards prize for Poetry. She was also awarded the 2016 Sidney Myer Creative Fellow for Poetry which was reported by The Australian, The Daily Review and ArtsHub.

- Brisbane Times reported QUT students joined other hackers at the Random Hacks of Kindness event.
- Media including Jimboomba Times used video from Brett Lewis and Dr Luke Nothdurft’s coral bleaching research.
- Samoa Observer reported the donation of 42 computers to the Congregational Christian Church at Vaoala from QUT.
- 612 ABC Breakfast spoke to Associate Professor Rosemary Kennedy about a growing trend in high-rise apartments in Brisbane.
