QUT’s intranet service has been recognised as one of Australia’s best by an international panel of judges.

Providing staff with access anywhere, anytime on any device, the intranet won praise, taking out a Gold Award in the 2016 Intranet and Digital Workplace Awards.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Judy Stokker, Technology, Information and Learning Support, said the staff portal, called Digital Workplace, was selected by Step Two Designs, a leading global thought-leader in intranets.

She said judges acknowledged QUT’s intranet delivered a personalised experience, presented enterprise wide and local business area content seamlessly based on a user’s profile and met the separate needs of staff and students.

Ms Stokker said the award was an acknowledgement of QUT’s innovation across the university’s community, particularly the project team and steering committee, led by Professor Ross Young.

“Launched in May last year, it offers a modern platform with targeted, role-based access to information and applications, and information management advantages over the previous intranet,” she said.

QUT’s Director, Information Technology Services, Chris Bridge, said that before the new intranet was launched staff frequently complained that it was difficult to find information due to duplication of content and a lack of an enterprise search.

“Staff feedback had been quite clear that they wanted a ‘Google like’ search experience and a consistent and cohesive front door to services and information,” he said.

“Digital Workplace uses the Looking Glass software platform provided by Campus Consortium but the design, look and feel, connections and content is built ‘from the ground up’ by QUT staff.

“One of the larger pieces of work was the complete review of staff facing content and delivery of an integrated search.

“This meant that instead of trying to find information spread across more than 15,000 pages in multiple formats in multiple repositories, staff can now search and discover information from a single point and see it presented in a consistent form.

“That content now exists in under 3000 pages and 96 per cent of searches find the right result the first time.”
