QUT has joined a major new initiative in medical imaging at the Translational Research Institute.

The new “TRI Innovation and Translation Centre in collaboration with Siemens Healthcare” will put Queensland at the forefront of global medical imaging technology.

The new centre, opened this week by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Science Minister Leeanne Enoch, will give the Translational Research Institute (TRI) the capability to develop the imaging technology and protocols needed to evaluate new targeted therapies as well as new cancer vaccines.

The Queensland Government will provide $3.25 million towards the centre, based at Princess Alexandra Hospital, which is only the second such facility in the world.

QUT Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Arun Sharma said QUT had had significant experience in establishing world-class research infrastructure and laboratories.

“QUT is committed to developing state-of-the-art imaging technology for Queensland,” he said.

“The University is, for example, a partner in the new Herston Imaging Research Facility with UQ, the Royal Brisbane and Royal Women’s Hospital and QIMR Berghofer, with Siemens also involved as the industry supporter.”

Professor Sharma said the new centre would draw on a multidisciplinary mix of researchers and professionals from biomedical science, medical imaging, biomedical engineering, imaging analysis, big data and modelling.

“QUT is funding three radiographers for three years for this program and these staff will supply a high level of expertise and support to our consortium partners.”

The TRI Innovation and Translation Centre in collaboration with Siemens Healthcare also involves the University of Queensland, Queensland Health, and Mater Research and will look to partner with QIMR Berghofer and the Hunter Medical Research Institute in Newcastle.
