Engineers Australia and Transport Australia Society (in collaboration with QUT) invite you to lunch and a panel discussion. The future of transport is highly topical across all engineering disciplines, with autonomous vehicle design progressing at rapid pace.
The future of transport is highly topical across all engineering disciplines thanks to rapid progressions in the area of autonomous vehicle design.
Autonomous vehicle trials are being carried out Australia-wide; In Queensland, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) are undertaking the Co-operative and Automated Vehicle Initiative (CAVI).
This initiative is in place to help prepare Queensland for the arrival of new vehicle technologies in a number of different facets, primarily: Safety, mobility, and environmental impact.
Our experienced panel will discuss the latest in automated vehicle technologies, the trials across Queensland, and the impact of infrastructure design with a focus on the evolving importance of communication between the research and development space and infrastructure design and construction.
A light meal will be served as part of the day's proceedings.

Volker Richter | Head of Total Vehicle Technology and Quality Management, BMW Group
A passionate car enthusiast, Volker has in-depth automotive knowledge as a result of his long-time industry experience in a range of centres across BMW Group and his infectious enthusiasm for vehicles and technology generally.
Volker is responsible for the setting the Quality Strategy, Quality Targets, Quality Processes and Systems for BMW Group’s Quality Management System. As a former Vice President for managing Total Vehicle Architecture and Integration within the BMW Research and Innovation Center (FIZ), he also has broad experience as General Manager across a wide range of divisions in BMW both in Germany and the US, with responsibility for areas such as Strategy and Steering Pre-Development, Advanced Engineering, Advanced Engineering Product Concepts, Technical Projects, Product Engineering Interior Components and Analysis Centre / Total Vehicle Quality.
Volker holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Aachen and has subsequently also undertaken automotive-focused research at the University of Stuttgart and Harvard Business School in Boston.
Dennis Walsh MIEAust CPEng APEC Engineer IntPE(Aus) | Chief Engineer of Transport and Main Roads
Dennis is a Chartered Professional Engineer, a member of Engineers Australia and a graduate of the Australian Institute of company directors.
Dennis has worked across a wide range of areas including strategic planning, traffic and transport planning, road safety policy and engineering, road design, road operations and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Having contributed to a range of national groups, Dennis is the Queensland Director on the ANCAP Board and currently serves as a board member and Vice President of ITS Australia. He is also a member of the Institute of Public Works Engineers Australia.
Dennis is committed to bringing together the skills and knowledge of his team and their partners to embrace new technologies, engage with customers and drive new ideas into action for the benefit of the community.
Sally Stannard I Civil Engineer, Apical Analysis, Design and Strategy (Apical ADS)
Sally is a Civil Engineer with a passion for making more equitable, accessible cities. She runs Apical Analysis, Design and Strategy (Apical ADS): A Brisbane-based transport planning business focused on analyzing data to inform decision making and designing and developing strategies that make operations more efficient and networks more connected for customers.
Prior to establishing Apical in 2015, Sally was Executive Director for Transport and Infrastructure in the TransLink Division of Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads following a stint as Director for Strategy and Planning at the TransLink Transit Authority.
Sally was responsible for leading the TransLink strategy, planning, infrastructure and analysis teams as they collaborated with transport operators to deliver project-based improvements to the public transport network in South East Queensland.
Panel Facilitator: Erin Thomas I Senior Traffic Engineer, WSP
Erin works as a Senior Traffic Engineer in the Transport Advisory and Planning team at WSP, an international professional services consultancy. Having worked in the civil engineering industry since 2006, she now specialises as a traffic engineer and transport modeller (microsimulation).
An accredited Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (RPEQ), Traffic Management Designer (TMD) and a listed professional on the Engineers Australia National Engineer Register, Erin has also completed two degrees at QUT including a Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering.
Erin has worked on projects throughout Australia and recent career highlights include the 2018 Commonwealth Games Traffic Management Design for the Department of Transport and Main Roads, and planning for far into the future at Brisbane Airport.
