QUT Law Alumna Rebecca Treston QC launched the 2020 mooting season at the QUTLS Ashurst Welcome to Moot Club in early March.
Rebecca Treston QC is a Doyles Guide listed barrister, recognised for her market leading estate litigation, the President of the Bar Association of Queensland and a QUT Law Graduate. Ms Treston spoke to the students about her top tips for advocacy and advised students that the key to success is not natural ability, but the willingness and dedication to develop advocacy skills through continual practice.
Elizabeth Stanley, a lawyer at the international law firm Ashurst, spoke to the students about how mooting can improve confidence and develop important practical skills which are vital to becoming an excellent lawyer.
QUT final year law students, Giulia Marrama and Teagan Matthews, spoke about the national and international mooting opportunities available at QUT.
Giulia Marrama is part of the QUT team set to compete in the Oxford IP Moot as one of 28 finalist universities chosen from around the world. QUT has had significant success at the Oxford IP Moot and is the only university in the world to win the prestigious international competition three times.
Teagan Matthews, who also presented to the students, was awarded the Most Dedicated to the Moot at the 2019 Harry Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot. Teagan is currently preparing her team’s submissions for the finals of the International Criminal Court Moot (ICC), which the team will compete in later this year.
Opportunities to compete in international competitions such as the Oxford IP Moot and the ICC Moot also allow law students to earn academic credit as general law electives, develop their advocacy skills, and travel the world.
QUTLS Moot Club Director, Catherine Bugler, provided over 100 attending law students with an overview of what mooting is and the opportunities available to students to develop their advocacy skills. The student-run QUT Law Society partners with industry to organise competitions for law students to hone practical real-world skills and engage with industry professionals. In Semester 1, the QUT Law Society will organise the Negotiation, Open Moot and First Year Moot Competitions.
The QUTLS Moot Club is a student run organisation that seeks to celebrate and advance mooting at QUT. The Moot Clubs are usually held throughout semester in the Law Library moot courts and are judged by experienced mooters and recent QUT alumni who are solicitors and junior barristers. In light of recent events QUTLS has been working tirelessly to make mooting events and competitions run without the need for physical attendance.
