Students, staff and legal professionals attended the annual Reconciliation Breakfast hosted by the QUT Law Society (QUTLS) in partnership with the QUT Faculty of Law.
The Reconciliation Breakfast plays a key role in fostering the relationship between the First Nations community, law students and the legal profession.
The event was attended by a number of high profile members of the legal community including Avelina Tarrago, President of the Indigenous Lawyers Association of Queensland. Each speaker gave a unique insight into 2019's reconciliation theme ‘Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage’.
Edward Williams, Director of Media and Communications for the QUTLS and second year Bachelor of Information Technology/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) student shared his favourite moments from this year’s breakfast.
"We heard from some very inspirational and powerful Indigenous voices this year. Wyatt Cook-Revell and Uncle Sam Watson spoke about Brisbane's traditional lands and what it means to be an ally of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. My personal highlight of the breakfast was Avelina Tarrago's speech on this year's Reconciliation theme, and her deliverance of a memorable quote from Jane Elliott about what courage means in the context of equality," he said.
“The Reconciliation Breakfast was an opportunity for our community to listen, learn and talk about how we can walk together in truth and courage. Avelina Tarrago’s speech calling us all to engage in truth-telling was empowering; the true story must be told, it must be heard, and it must be acknowledged,” said Wyatt Cook-Revell, third year Bachelor of Laws (Honours) student.
The event was made possible by the QUTLS' sponsors QUT Faculty of Law, Colin Biggers & Paisley, HopgoodGanim, King & Wood Mallesons and McCullough Robertson.
