10 October 2017

The Australian Centre for Health Law Research and the Queensland Health Ethics and Law group are delighted to host Professor Cameron Stewart, Sydney Law School to present Selling Stem Cells: The regulation of the market for autologous stem cells.

Please join members of the Australian Centre for Health Law Research and the Queensland Health Ethics and Law Group for light refreshments in QUT's Gibson Room followed by the lecture.

Professor Stewart will present the latest findings from his research in Australia’s growing autologous stem cell industry. That industry is part of an international market which is expanding rapidly, selling cellular products which have not been subjected to the same standards of scientific proof as other therapies.

His presentation will describe the probable causes of this market’s emergence, its practices and advertising. He will raise a series of questions about the legitimacy of the industry and the problem of using ‘innovation’ as the justification for departures from the ordinary practices of medicine. He suggests that there are a number of significant legal and ethical risks facing the industry.

Professor Stewart is a member of Sydney Health Law, Sydney Law School, and an Associate of Sydney Health Ethics (previously the Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine), Sydney Medical School. He worked in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and practiced commercial law at Phillips Fox Lawyers.

His previous appointment was at Macquarie Law School, where he spent 10 years, the last of which as Dean. He was Pro-Dean of Sydney Law School from 2013-2016, the Director of CHGLE from 2009-2012, Acting President of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Health Law and Ethics from 2008-2010, and Vice-President of the Australasian Association of Bioethics and Health Law from 2010-2013. His current work is focused on tissue regulation, stem cell therapies, and end-of-life law.
