Lawyer Johanna Kennerley

Can you sum up in a sentence what you do?

I am a senior associate in Energy & Resources and Commercial Property teams, specialising in planning and environment law.

What do you like most about your job?

The best part of my job is working with a great team, doing interesting work and developing a specialisation in environment and planning law.

What kind of community work do you do?

I volunteer at the Caxton Legal Centre.

What are your future goals?

I hope to be a Partner at Carter Newell in 5 years – lots of work ahead!

What did you find most beneficial about your experience at QUT?

Flexibility in the coursework program. I was able to complete subjects that interested me, but also undertake research projects on particular issues that were of interest in my work.

What helped you to balance postgraduate study with work and life?

The fact that most courses were available online was necessary to allow me to complete my studies. Also, intensive offerings were really beneficial.

How will your studies help you meet the challenges you face in your role?

Doing my Master of Laws helped me to establish my expertise in planning and environment law. I am also guest lecturing on petroleum pipelines for the Natural Resources subject.

Johanna Kennerley is a Senior Associate at Carter Newell. She completed a Master of Laws at QUT in 2016.
