From 15 March, distinguished lawyers from around the world will preside over the Ian Fletcher International Insolvency Law Moot 2017 to determine the winner.
Having progressed through a challenging written round, qualifying teams have an exciting opportunity to impress judges from North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific to claim victory at the moot in its inaugural year.
In a bid to promote knowledge of international insolvency laws, the competition has fostered collaboration between leading insolvency experts with eminent judges keen to contribute.
"The idea of bringing together students from different countries to participate in a moot of a truly international nature is exciting for the presiding judges and will be rewarding for the participants,” said the Hon Justice Paul Heath, Judge of the High Court of New Zealand.
“I know all of the international judges who will preside over the moot are looking forward to the competition.”
The judges - comprising of members from global professional associations, academia and the judiciary - are excited by their dual role of mentoring students while evaluating their advocacy skills.
“Given the ever growing importance of insolvency systems in our global village, the need for this competition is beyond question. I am thrilled by the prospect of witnessing the development of a new generation of international insolvency lawyers,” said Professor Kathleen van der Linde, Head of the Department for Mercantile Law at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Unique in its consideration of cross-border insolvency issues, the Fletcher Moot allows students to combine learning of international insolvency laws with litigation practice; creating a dynamic training opportunity that is relevant to the real world.
“The Fletcher Moot presents a fantastic opportunity for students to consider some of the more complex cross-border elements of a restructuring, which practitioners grapple with on a regular basis due to the increasingly global nature of today's capital structures and debt financing," said Ashley Bell, Partner at DLA Piper Hong Kong.
A joint initiative between the QUT Faculty of Law, INSOL International and the International Insolvency Institute, the Fletcher Moot is being held in conjunction with the INSOL 2017 Tenth World Quadrennial Congress in Sydney. It will take place immediately prior to the congress on 15 - 17 March 2017.
