20 May 2016

More than 220 students, sponsors, staff and guests gathered at the QUT Faculty of Law’s annual Prize Ceremony on Thursday 19 May 2016.

Law and Justice recipients were awarded certificates for achieving the best performance in their units of study, or acknowledged for their community involvement or extra-curricular activities in the 2015 academic year.

Jessica Peterson received the Tom Cain Trophy for Outstanding Achievement, a prize awarded annually to a graduate of the Bachelor of Laws course who achieves their award with honours greater than or equal to Second Class Division A and who has demonstrated high achievement in extra-curricular activities.

The Executive Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor John Humphrey congratulated students.

"One unit is but one step along your path to graduation, but to have been the top-performing student within a sizable student group in a high performing course means that you are doing very well," he said.

The Faculty was pleased to host Dr Kirstin Ferguson at the ceremony who graduated from QUT with a Bachelor of Laws in 2001, and Harriet Horsfall who is a QUT Justice Graduate and Queensland’s Rhodes Scholar for 2016.

Harriet Horsfall spoke to the students about the crucial role that winning subject prizes can play in opening professional and developmental doors, while encouraging them to channel their success towards things they care about.

"Hard work and high achievements hold hidden value in your capacity to explore complementary opportunities for service and growth beyond the university classroom," she said.

"Use your achievements as leverage to take risks, to push, challenge and develop yourselves into the leading justice and law professionals of tomorrow."

The Faculty aims to continue to support Law and Justice students in their studies, encourage students’ personal academic potential, and provide opportunities to engage with industry and community sponsors.

Thank you to our generous sponsors:

We also appreciate the support of the Connolly, Leiboff and Dick families.

The faculty would like to once again congratulate all student recipients on their achievements.
