Make the most of our facilities including gymnasium and aquatic centres on both campuses, a multipurpose sports stadium with a running track, an esports arena and tennis centre.
Find your people
You can choose from 150 clubs with a focus on sport, religion, culture, or special interests—everything from a cappella music to anime. Or start your own club to connect with others who have similar interests.
As an international student, there is so much more to university than choosing a course. QUT is a diverse place. It's also very welcoming. Make the most of what university life has to offer.
Put Orientation on your to-do list
Tour the university and get to know the campus, meet your lecturers and tutors, and attend workshops to get you started. There is fun too. Barbeques, concerts and competitions. Join a club. Meet new people. Orientation is an essential start to uni life.
Play sport and get fit
Join a competitive or social sporting program across a range of activities including athletics, football, esports, netball, swimming and motorsports. Be part of the QUT Tigers by representing QUT at university and national university events or join a sport or recreation-based club.
Join the fun
Look out for celebrations like Pasifika Night or Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. Try the QUT Classic fun run, Dragon Boat Regatta or TEDxQUT. Make new friends over free coffee, cooking classes or volunteer on campus.
Learn and lead
Get involved in Advantage workshops and attend our annual student leadership conference to expand your network, boost your resume and enhance your employability with personal and professional development.
Love gaming? So do we.
The future of sports is here. Esports is a huge industry and QUT can help you be part of it. Our purpose-built arena is Australia's first university gaming space. QUT esports will support your passion with access to skills training, experience and placement in this multidisciplinary industry.

QUT orientation week
A common misconception about university is that you have to do it on your own. You will be relieved to know that QUT offers many proactive and timely support services to help you succeed. You will have access to a range of free services both within your course and outside of class. We are here to support you throughout your student journey.
Pre-departure briefings
Hear current international students talk about their experiences and learn more about moving to Brisbane and studying at QUT. Details of pre-departure briefings are made available well before the start of each semester.
Welcome to Brisbane
QUT offers a free 24/7 Brisbane airport reception service for new international students. We'll meet you at the domestic or international airport and take you to your local accommodation.
Settling in and making friends
It's a big step moving to a new country, but also an exciting one. QUT is there to help you settle in and we look forward to welcoming you to Brisbane and our campus. QUT Student Support Services offers a range of important services that will help you settle in.
Support services
Moving to a new country can be a big change, but don't worry. We are here to help.
QUT offers a range of services to help you settle into university including language and learning skills development, personal and confidential counselling sessions, support for families, clubs and activities.
Connect with peers to get support, attend a writing workshop, or meet with one of our Student Success Coaches to develop a learning plan.
QUT's dedicated advisors at HiQ are available to help with every step along the way.
QUT medical centres and health clinics
The QUT medical centres and health clinics provide quality low-cost healthcare and advice to all students.
Staying safe
Student safety on campus is our top priority. QUT provides 24/7 security services on campus and students can download the free SafeZone app.
Before moving in, you have to pay a bond (a security deposit) as well as paying two weeks rent in advance. Generally you sign a lease for six to 12 months. Some places are fully furnished and others unfurnished. There are often additional expenses such as gas, electricity, internet and phone. Prices range from AU$250 to AU$350 per student per week in a shared house or apartment.
Temporary accommodation
If you have not confirmed your university accommodation before moving to Brisbane, QUT recommends that you arrive three to four weeks before classes begin to look for long-term accommodation in person. Make sure you book short-term accommodation such as a hotel, hostel
or furnished apartment for your arrival.
Under 18 supervision program
The Australian Department of Home Affairs requires that students under the age of 18 have appropriate accommodation, support and welfare arrangements in place before they start their studies at QUT. We are here to guide you through the process and help you settle into your new life and study in Brisbane.
Moving to study in Australia is a big step, but many of our students say it is the best move they ever made.
Our inner-city campus locations mean there is no shortage of accommodation options—some right on QUT's doorstep. And with a great public transport network including buses, trains and ferries—as well as a free intercampus shuttle—getting around is easy too.
To help you get settled, our Accommodation Services team provides information about student accommodation and a vacancies database, as well as advice about finding the right place and tenancy matters that you should know about.
There are three broad categories of student accommodation.
Student apartment complexes
Provide you with a self-catering option in a single apartment or a room within a larger apartment. They are fully furnished and provide a supported student community. Cost per week ranges from AU$265 to AU$500 and usually includes utility and internet charges. Many are less than a five minute walk from QUT.
Managed share-house accommodation
Provides you with your own fully furnished, lockable bedroom and shared common area such as bathroom, kitchen and living area. They are managed by real estate agents or other companies specialising in student accommodation. Prices ranges from AU$165 to AU$300 each week and usually include utilities and internet.
Rental property
Brisbane has numerous private rental options varying in cost depending on location, condition and number of rooms. You can live alone or share with other people.
Prepare to move
Gain practical international business experience
The Launch U Trade Accelerator program (LTA) is a virtual program for QUT students to work with Queensland-based exporters and trade professionals. You'll be part of a student team assigned to a business project focusing on a specific international market.
We know that a bright future begins with an experience that teaches you to question, to innovate and to collaborate. As a QUT graduate, you'll be in high demand. Here's why.
Innovative course design
With industry and government partners involved in course design, our degrees reflect the latest global thinking and standards.
Practical learning, technology centred
Practise first in our industry-standard labs, workshops, studios and clinics with technology used by professionals. Or work on simulations and real projects. Practical learning starts from your very first semester in some of our courses.
Teaching staff who are industry leaders
Want to know what's happening in your industry or profession? Looking for contacts to arrange work experience? Our courses are taught by full-time academic staff alongside part-time lecturers and tutors who are working in the field. This means they'll share their real-life examples and keep you in the loop about opportunities for projects, work experience and internships.
Work integrated learning (WIL)
Work experience can make a big difference when you're applying for your dream job. We build work integrated learning units into your course so you'll have opportunities to work with an organisation in your field, build important networks and learn what your future career could really be like.

Develop your entrepreneurial capability
Do you have a business idea or an interest in start-ups? Are you eager to make a difference in the world or develop new skills? Don't wait until you graduate. We will empower you to bring your ideas to life by developing your entrepreneurial mindset and practice in programs, at events and through mentoring.
Connect with like-minded others in our foundry spaces at both Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove. Join our in-person and virtual community of entrepreneurial thinkers and doers. You can access QUT Orbit for information and advanced entrepreneurial programs such as Start, Fuel and Ignite. Be mentored by our entrepreneur-in-residence and community managers. Participate in networking and collaboration opportunities.
We offer a range of events to help you realise your entrepreneurial capabilities, including our regular Pitch Nights, Community Coffees, and Lunch and Learns, as well as major programs in collaboration with our partners.
Develop your employability
Career preparation starts well before your final year. We'll support you with:
At QUT, I have encountered amazing mentors who have all brought me new challenges and many opportunities. I am proud to have studied at QUT and excited to use my university skills in my new job at Apple.

Studying abroad as part of your QUT degree will not only enhance your time here but will give you invaluable life experience. Go immerse yourself in another culture, expose yourself to new and different perspectives, and build connections with people on the other side of the world. Just go. We promise it will be nothing short of life changing.
Global experiences
You can spend as little as one week or as long as one year in destinations around the world. We offer a semester or year-long exchange program, as well as short-term options including global internships, volunteering, service learning, faculty-led study tours, clinical placements and research practicums.
Learn another language
If learning a language is on your must-do list, choose from nine languages—including Spanish, Indonesian and Mandarin—offered by the Brisbane Universities Languages Alliance.
Global reputation, more recognition

The first level degree at a university, normally requiring at least three years of full-time study.
Credit granted for prior learning. Advanced standing is expressed in terms of the unit(s) and/or the number of credit points given towards the completion of a QUT course.
A major is the primary area of study usually consisting of eight units in your degree. For example, chemistry is the major for the Bachelor of Science (Chemistry). A course might also have a secondary area of study (e.g. a second major or minor). A second major is usually six to eight units and a minor is four units.
Electives are individual units that are not mandatory. You may be able to choose from a unit related to your course, or from across the university to expand your interests.
You will have a variety of on-campus learning activities with online support for your study.
If you study in online or external mode, you'll engage primarily in online environments. In some courses you may need to attend a campus or another location for a work placement, workshop, practical, assessment, orientation, or an intensive day or weekend of face-to-face learning activities.
The number of points assigned to a unit, study area or complementary studies that count towards the enrolment load and total points to complete a course.
Your degree is made up of a number of units (subjects). Some units are compulsory (core units).
A sub-bachelor qualification usually one year in duration. QUT offers diplomas as a pathway to our bachelors degree, and also recognises diplomas from other institutions.
Honours denotes higher-level course content than a bachelor degree. It may be part of the degree—known as a bachelor honours degree—such as our Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours). You might also undertake an honours year after completing your bachelor degree.
Masters by coursework
Postgraduate program requiring completion of at least two semesters of equivalent full-time study. Programs consist of a series of specialist courses and sometimes a research component.
Masters by research
A postgraduate program based on scholarly or scientific investigation or inquiry.

Why choose a double degree?
Create your own specialist career niche by combining two complementary study areas that interest you. You will save money and time by completing a double degree instead of two separate degrees. Your opportunities will double with two degrees, and you will have numerous options to work in a range of careers offered by each of your study areas. This will give you a competitive advantage with employers who value your broader understanding across more than one field.
How does it work?
Combine two bachelor degrees into a single course and expand your study and career opportunities.
With a double degree you'll:
A double degree doesn't mean double the workload. You will usually have the same workload and complete the same number of units (subjects) each semester as a single degree student. Check your course structure for details.
In most cases you'll study units from both disciplines at the same time, although some double degrees are structured so you'll spend some semesters focusing exclusively on one study area.
