Geological sample preparation

Overview

QUT’s Central Analytical Research Facility (CARF) has specialist expertise in geological sample preparation and analysis, and has equipment for rock cutting and crushing, core logging, thin sections and soil analysis. This geological rock preparation facility is based at the Banyo Pilot Plant. This facility consists of a rock crushing and milling lab, and a geological thin section preparation lab, run by specialist technicians.

Our services

Our expert technicians can provide the following geological rock sample preparation services:

  • Polished thin sections
  • Ground and cover slipped thin sections
  • Double polished thin sections to 100 micron thick
  • Polished slabs
  • Crushing and milling
  • Fraction sizing
  • Directional thin sections with indication marks cut into the sample
  • Blue dye impregnation for porosity checks
  • Double polished thin sections for fluid inclusions

The thin section laboratory can prepare geological thin sections in a number of sizes, including:

  • 28 x 48mm (common for microprobe work)
  • 26 x 76mm
  • 50 x 76mm
  • 76 x 100mm.

Services and equipment hire

Accessing services and equipment

We assist students, researchers and commercial organisations to prepare geological rock samples for scientific analysis.

Our services are provided on a fee-for-service basis. We will discuss your requirements and timeframes, and prepare a costed proposal for your approval before commencing any work. We can also arrange for further analysis of your samples within the Central Analytical Research Facility’s specialist laboratories as required.

Please contact us to discuss any research needs and collaboration opportunities.
