OVERVIEW

A fascinating difference in the financial aspects of Australian and Dutch flood management is that in Australia more than 95% is spent on evacuation and flood recovery, while in the Netherlands more than 95% is spent on flood prevention. To what extent is this difference explained by hydrological and geographical factors and to what extent by cultural, political, and financial factors? This presentation will explain the costing structure and OECD assessment of Dutch water management. It will also reflect on strategies to keep the finances of Dutch water management climate change proof and on which Dutch strategies may be applicable in Australia.
