Position: Professor of Robotic Vision, Science and Engineering Faculty; Director of ARC Centre of Excellence for Robotic Vision

Expertise: Robotic Vision

What are you working on at the moment?
I'm currently teaching QUT's first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to over 10,000 students around the world. This is the culmination of nearly two years of quite intense work.

I'm also the Director of the relatively new Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Robotic Vision, working to knit together a team of existing and new researchers to work on the research problems that will allow future robots to see, learn and respond as humans do.

Why is your work important?
I believe robotics is the next transformative technology, and will contribute to solving a number of societal challenges, for example, food production, transportation, and an ageing workforce. Creating robots with visual perception that can understand complex and unstructured real-world environments will provide increased productivity in industries critical to Australia's economy.

What excites or inspires you about your field?
Creating futuristic technology and working with great people who are passionate about what they do, including undergraduate students, PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and colleagues.

What are your hopes for the future?
I hope to continue to teach and inspire the next generation of robotics engineers and researchers, and to help usher in a new era of capable (and visually enabled) robots that will truly help society.
