IFE’s Central Analytical Research Facility (CARF) will support growing demand for advanced analytical technologies at QUT with the launch of a state-of-the-art proteomics and mass spectrometry laboratory. QUT Vice Chancellor Professor Margaret Sheil officially opened the new laboratory by cutting a protein ribbon with custom-made trypsin scissors.

CARF Director Professor Stephen Blanksby said the opening of the new laboratory directly underpinned QUT’s growth in proteomics and mass spectrometry capabilities.

“The technology developed at CARF in proteomics and mass spectrometry is having an impact at QUT by facilitating industry collaboration and increased publication output.

“This investment will support a range of initiatives in advanced proteomics and mass spectrometry by creating a new space for research and industry collaboration.”

The launch was followed by a behind-the-scenes showcase of CARF’s research capabilities and expertise.

The event was opened by IFE Executive Director Professor Kerrie Wilson, who said all contemporary research, and especially science, engineering and medical disciplines rely on foundational research infrastructure.

“These capabilities are reflected in cutting-edge equipment, deep technical expertise of talented staff and fit-for-purpose physical spaces – all of which is reflected in CARF. There have been a rapid evolution of technology and some remarkable, transformative changes.

“Investment in CARF is an ongoing priority for the IFE, but it’s important to remember that research infrastructure is not just about the equipment, it’s about the people, who are our most valuable assets.

“Some of the scientists you’ll hear from today have won awards, discovered new techniques and methods and have made research breakthroughs.”

The extensive event program featured presentations from discipline leaders who outlined CARF’s world class technology capabilities and how future initiatives will further advance research outputs at QUT.
