A new partnership between the Institute for Future Environments (IFE) and behavioural science company Evidn will help solve global problems by putting people at the centre of research.

The QUT-Evidn partnership team (from left) Dr John Pickering (Evidn), Dr Angela Dean (IFE), Prof Kerrie Wilson, Dr Erik Simmons (IFE) and Ms Jinny Hong (Evidn).

Launched on 19 November at QUT, Institute for Future Environments Executive Director Kerrie Wilson said applying specialist behavioural science expertise to evidence-based research projects would help increase impact, delivery and uptake.

“IFE and Evidn are working together to actively identify and co-design projects that will draw on expertise not only from the behavioural sciences, but from areas of QUT research strengths. This might include the environment sector, energy and agricultural sectors.”

Evidn CEO Dr John Pickering said their team of behavioural and psychological scientists think about ways to implement principles of human behaviour to create change for good.

“Whether it’s our use of technology, the way society transitions to sustainable practices, or establishing policies that affect economies—human behaviour plays a critical role. The process of change starts and ends with people.

“We’re excited to work with the IFE to help unlock a step change in the reach and long-term impact of scientific ideas by creating change at a population level.”

QUT behavioural scientist Dr Angela Dean said that understanding people provides a pathway to create real change.

“We can have the best technology or best solution to an environmental problem, but if it doesn’t meet the needs of society, if it’s hard to use, then it’s not going to be effective.

“What excites me about this partnership is the opportunity for our research findings to leap off the page and make a difference in the real world.”
