The QUT Science in Focus Image Competition showcases the most beautiful, unexpected and complex images of important QUT scientific research. QUT students and staff can share in a prize pool of more than $2000.

Entries have now closed. Finalists will be contacted via email in October.

For the first time, Science in Focus is accepting video entries. The new category attracts a $500 prize for the most outstanding entry. QUT staff and students are also eligble to enter any type of image, including light and electron microscopy, photography, digital illustrations, machine outputs, scans and x-ray patterns.

2018 Science in Focus prizes:

  • First prize: $1000
  • Second prize: $500
  • Video prize: $500
  • People’s choice award: $250

Judging criteria

Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, technical proficiency, visual impact and informational content. Judges are particularly interested in seeing images and video that demonstrate or depict the impact of QUT research. View the 2018 competition guidelines for full details.

Entering is easy

  1. Capture visually striking, unexpected and/or inspiring images or video of QUT research.
  2. Go online and submit up to three high-resolution image or video files, include the title, a brief description and a summary of the importance and/or impact of the research it relates to.
  3. Finalists will be notified via email in October.

The finalists will be displayed on the big screen at a finalist exhibition and award ceremony in The Cube at QUT Gardens Point on Friday 19 October. Winners will be revealed at the event, including the people’s choice award which is decided via an online public vote.
