How do I become a counsellor by studying at QUT?

Counsellors work with people to create change in their lives, relationships and personal well-being.

Employment opportunities include private practice, government and non-government organisations, hospitals and educational institutions and community organisations. They enjoy diverse and rewarding specialty areas, such as:

At QUT, you will learn a range of counselling approaches and techniques that can be applied in a number of professional settings. Our Master of Counselling is ideal for people seeking to develop advanced knowledge and skills in counselling for their career advancement in existing roles, or to transition into other professional settings. Students in this program come from psychology, nursing, education, medicine, law, community arts, justice, human services, and other allied health backgrounds.

Degree pathways

QUT offers you foundational knowledge and specialist skills that prepare you to become a registered counsellor. Our Australian Counselling Association accredited Master of Counselling prepares professionals from a variety of settings to develop skills in counselling. This practice-based program includes supervised clinical practice in the QUT Health Clinics, where community members receive professional family therapy and counselling services.

Years 1-3

Complete a bachelor's degree suitable for entry into the Master of Counselling course (approximately 3 years full time). See the Master of Counselling academic entry requirements for more information.

Years 4-5

Complete our Master of Counselling (2 years full time), accredited by the Australian Counselling Association.
