‘QUT offers degrees in nutrition and dietetics and nutrition science. If you want to work as an accredited dietitian you would choose to study the nutrition and dietetics course. The nutrition science degree is more generalised and prepares you to work with communities. However the first two years of these degrees are the same so it’s possible to use the nutrition science course to upgrade to nutrition and dietetics. I chose to study nutrition and dietetics because it combines two things I love, food and science!’

The placement year was very challenging but provided insight into how wide the career scope for dietitians can be. I went from designing menus at an acquired brain injury unit to delivering corporate health days. I’m now helping people with their diet and exercise in my own business, Your Fit.

QUT is a young university in comparison to others but that just means it is constantly striving to be better. The staff and research community are really committed to seeing you succeed. After completing my undergraduate degree in nutrition and dietetics I have progressed to undertaking a PhD focusing on dietary intake and intervention to support performance in esports. I hope my research will assist the esports industry in reaching new heights in performance while also assisting players to be as healthy as possible.

Real-world learning
Gain hands-on experience providing nutrition assessments and dietary advice to real clients in QUT Health Clinics. Under the supervision of accredited dietitians, you will provide advice for the management of chronic disease, before and after surgery, eating disorders, food intolerance and allergies.
You will also complete professional placements in settings including community health centres, hospitals, correctional facilities and catering institutions. There are opportunities to travel, with the option to gain professional experience in rural and regional Australia, and overseas.

Dietitians use their advanced knowledge in the science of nutrition to advise on appropriate diet, food preparation and menu planning to treat nutrition-related disease.
Accredited practising dietitians often work alongside health professionals in hospitals and community settings delivering individual dietary counselling, medical nutrition therapy and group dietary therapy. Their work contributes to the promotion of health, the prevention and treatment of disease such as diabetes and cancer, and optimal health maintenance.
The honours component of this course offers you a competitive advantage in the workplace. You will become a critical thinker with a strong foundation in research, and develop advanced skills to lead in a profession where responsibilities and capabilities are expanding.
Work Integrated Learning
During this course you will be required to complete 800 hours of professional placements.
Careers and outcomes
Graduates have a range of career pathways. They can provide medical nutrition therapy to clients in the management of disease and illness in hospitals, private practice, community health centres and nursing homes. They may also consult to the food industry on product development and marketing, prepare educational resources for industry, schools and community, or develop food and nutrition policies for government and non-government organisations. They can also follow careers in academia, research, business, corporate health and social media.
Professional recognition
This course is accredited by the Dietitians Australia and graduates are eligible to apply for the Accredited Practising Dietitian credential. APD status is a requirement for medical benefit rebates.
Graduates can apply for membership of the Dietitians Australia, the Public Health Association of Australia, Sports Medicine Australia, the Nutrition Society and other bodies.
Clinical dietitians can work in hospitals or outpatient settings or in private practice with individual clients or groups to help treat or manage their disease. Foodservice dietitians work in many setting to provide safe and nutritious foods.

Overseas qualifications
QUT will consider equivalent overseas qualifications for admissions purposes. If you have tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.
English language proficiency
We require students to demonstrate they can speak, write, read and comprehend academic English to a specified standard.
Our English proficiency requirements for this course are:
- IELTS (Academic): 7.0 or better overall with no subscore below 6.5
- PTE: 65 or better overall with no subscore below 58
- TOEFL (IBT): 98 or better overall with a writing subscore of 24 or better, and other subscore below 20
- Cambridge English Score: 185 or better overall with no subscore below 176
The test must have been completed within 2 years prior to the proposed course start month.

Advanced standing
If you have prior studies or work experience, you may be eligible for advanced standing (credit). You can apply for advanced standing once you've been accepted to QUT. If you're in your first semester of study, you must apply for advanced standing within 10 days of receiving your offer.
