One of Brisbane's founding fathers, an immigrant tradesman who contributed to the establishment of some of our city's iconic historical buildings and former mayor, has been remembered at QUT through the generosity of his family.
The Joshua Jeays Memorial Award was established through donations from Mrs Judith H Shaw, great great granddaughter of Joshua Jeays (1812–1881).
Mrs Shaw’s donations fund an Award in Joshua Jeays’ name, with the goal of supporting low-income students studying Civil and/or Environmental Engineering, or Urban Development, while at the same time honouring the contribution of Joshua Jeays to the development of Brisbane.
Joshua Jeays was born in Leicester, United Kingdom, and was a carpenter who became a successful developer, an alderman of the first Brisbane Municipal Council and the fourth mayor of Brisbane.
Beyond his civic roles, Joshua Jeays worked as a builder, architect and stonemason and was involved in the construction of the gallery of the original St John's pro-cathedral in the Queen's Gardens; was involved in the development of Brisbane's water supply and drainage system; built and provided the stone for Brisbane's first Government House (now part of QUT Gardens Point); and partially built the George Street side of the Queensland Parliament House (completed by John Petrie in 1868).
This Award is offered at the Faculty’s discretion to assist students who are achieving well at university despite financial and/or personal barriers to their studies.
I would like to thank the donor of this award for their generosity as this will help me commit to my studies over the upcoming exam period as I won’t need to be concerned about earning money over this period and I can use my time on the things I want so I can perform well in the next exam period. I appreciate the opportunity this award presents. Nickolas Trevisiol, second year Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) student
Thank you so much for creating this Joshua Jeays Memorial Award! I greatly appreciate being selected for this award. I was wishing to be an Engineer since I was 12 years old back in my country (Afghanistan). It was my Mum and all the family’s wishes too and I thought my wish would never come true. I am doing my second year of civil engineering at QUT and I am enjoying every moment of my university study. This award makes a huge difference for me financially, and receive my thank you message for making my dreams one step closer. Thanks again for your donation. Naqibullah Danesh, second year Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) student.
