The ‘indomitable character’ of former QUT staff member, Coral Hyde, inspired her colleagues, family and friends to establish a special award in her honour to encourage mature aged single parents to persevere with their degrees.
In 2017, two Science and Engineering students have been awarded The Coral Hyde Memorial Award to encourage and reward them for making significant progression through one of the Faculty’s undergraduate courses.
On being awarded the Coral Hyde Memorial Award, third year Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) student, Stuart Sheriff, said: “Thank you to the donors, your support will allow me to not only assist my studies it also enables me to provide for my special needs son study tools at the same time”.
The Coral Hyde Memorial Award was established in 2000 through donations in memory of Ms Hyde, an esteemed colleague who worked within the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering (now part of the Science and Engineering Faculty) for over 10 years.
Balancing work and family life is a challenge experienced by many, but it takes an extra special person like Ms Hyde to successfully juggle single parenthood of three children while working full-time and studying at university. Coral returned to study as a mature age student, graduating with a course GPA of 6.17. During her part-time study, Coral supported her three daughters – who all went on to study at QUT – and worked full-time in the Faculty Office.
The Coral Hyde Memorial Award is offered at the Faculty’s discretion to assist mature aged students who are single parents and have made significant progress towards an undergraduate degree offered through the Science and Engineering Faculty.
2017 Student testimonials:
Thank you to the donors, your support will allow me to not only assist my studies it also enables me to provide for my special needs son study tools at the same time. Stuart Sheriff
Thank you to the donors of the Coral Hyde Memorial Award. I am overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity. Your support has certainly taken the stress out of my immediate need to find a part-time job, and I can now fully focus on studying for exams. The award will help us with student fees and books in semester 2, as well as groceries, and before and after school care fees for at least a couple of months. Thank you so much. We greatly appreciate your kind support. (Student name withheld)
