RangerBot for the Reef

See how robotics technology is being used to help protect the world&rsquo\;s coral reefs.

QUT&rsquo\;s reef protector robot RangerBot\, created by Professor Matthew Dunbabin\, is fitted with real-time computer vision technologies to navigate complex coral reefs.

RangerBot has been designed to perform an increasing portfolio of reef management and restoration tasks. This includes identification and control of Crown-of-thorns starfish\, and more recently being transformed into LarvalBot to deliver millions of coral larvae coinciding with the annual coral spawning on the Great Barrier Reef and in the Philippines. Researchers say by giving nature a helping hand through artificial means\, this will allow large-scale management and protection of the world&rsquo\;s coral reefs.
