Teaching Advantage in July, new baby in August and Associate Fellow in September. 2019 has been a busy and rewarding year for Rebecca Langdon.
Expecting her first baby and working as a Sessional Academic in the QUT Business School whilst working on her PhD, Rebecca completed Teaching Advantage (TA) in July 2019. TA is offered by QUT Academy of Learning and Teaching (QALT) in conjunction with the QUT Business School.
The 3-day award-winning TA program includes foundational professional learning on curriculum design, assessment, feedback and teaching portfolios. It provides post-confirmation PhD candidates with an opportunity to develop their skills and prepare for an academic career.
TA Directors, Professor Abby Cathcart and Professor Larry Neale commended Rebecca on her commitment as an educator to participate in the program so late in her pregnancy and with an already challenging workload.
Upon completion, TA participants are supported to apply for recognition as an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA). As part of this process, the QALT team provide drop-in consultations to provide feedback on draft applications. Rebecca attended just a few days before commencing her maternity leave.
Born a few weeks early, baby Paige arrived just days after the feedback session and less than three weeks before applications for fellowship closed. Much to the surprise of the QALT team, an application was received for AFHEA from none other than Rebecca Langdon, who had completed her fellowship application from her hospital bed.
"I didn't have much else to do whilst stuck in hospital," Rebecca said.
The QALT and TA teams were thrilled when Rebecca's application was successfully assessed by the review panel. The ambitious TA participant, committed educator and new mum would also be recognised as an AFHEA.
Rebecca is now taking some time off from her PhD but will return to the university in the new year, proudly displaying her AFHEA and implementing what she learned in TA as she finishes her PhD and continues in her academic career at QUT.
