20 Medal Haul for Tigers at National University Championships

First published 23 October 2019

315 QUT students represented the University across 20 different sports at the 2019 UniSport Division 1 National Championships earlier this month.

40 Australian Universities and Institutions converged on the Gold Coast to contest the event and the QUT Tigers team finished in 8th place overall on the rankings ladder.

The QUT women’s cycling team led the gold medal hunt, claiming the overall pennant following a successful road race, criterium, individual and team trial campaign.

QUT student and golfer Ben Stieler also achieved a top ranking, taking out the overall win at the golf competition and securing a place in the Australian Golf Championships.

Maddy Andersen, QUT student and National fencer claimed gold and bronze medals in the women’s fencing competition, and the Cheer & Dance team also won gold in the hip hop duo before going on to claim another gold performance in the Level 1/2 All Girl event.

Cheer & Dance Team Captain Rhiannon Zara spoke highly of the experience.

‘My favourite part about the UniSport Nationals is the atmosphere and community feel.

‘Everyone at QUT is so supportive and wants to see you succeed.

‘Standing on the competition floor and having over 100 Tigers screaming ‘go QUT’ at you is something that don’t easily forget and makes you feel a part of something bigger than just yourself and your degree,’ Zara said.

The QUT Tigers put on a show with boundless spirt, a testament to the hard work behind the scenes from the student team managers, coaches and supporting staff.

The National Championships Division 1 & 2 are set to be held in Perth in September 2020.
