Coulter’s vibrant sculptural work, ADAPTABLE CONSTRUCTION #2 2015, which recently featured in our Thinking into Being exhibition, will find its permanent home at QUT, and serve as a unique learning and teaching resource for QUT students and staff, and the wider community.
Having graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) and Bachelor of Built Environment (Interior Design) from QUT, artist Emma Coulter engages with architecture and its surrounds to create multichromatic, sculptural interventions, through a methodical, site-specific approach to painting.
As exemplified in ADAPTABLE CONSTRUCTION #2, Coulter works with colour in a serial way, through a refined colour palette, creating the artist’s own bold, idiosyncratic spectrum. Her works are an investigation into the semantics of colour and form, and the creation of meaning and language through both spatial arrangement and colour relationships.
ADAPTABLE CONSTRUCTION #2 is designed to adapt to its environment — the spacing of each coloured steel frame can be altered to best suit where it is displayed.
The artwork is being donated through the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program, and meets a number of QUT collecting priorities, including procuring major works that assist in contextualising existing holdings, and representing the best of contemporary Australian art, including the acquisition of works by identified key QUT-trained artists.
