Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle supports QUT prostate cancer research
The Downer Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle (B2GC) Challenge is one of Australia’s biggest charity cycling events. Celebrating its 16th year, this year’s event on Sunday 17 October will support Stronger For Longer, a volunteer-run group that works in partnership with QUT to support promising prostate cancer research.
Prostate cancer affects 1 in 7 Australian men and claims the lives of 3,500 people each year. Stronger For Longer plays a critical role in reducing these statistics through innovative and life-changing treatments.
Major sponsor of the event, Downer is partnering with Bicycle Queensland to help shine a light on this key men's health issue.
“We are committed to supporting the communities where we operate, and we are dedicated to the health and wellbeing of our people,” said Pat Burke, Head of Facilities and Asset Services for Downer. “The B2GC Challenge not only promotes healthy communities by encouraging a healthy lifestyle, but through its support of Stronger For Longer will help to raise awareness for important prostate cancer research.”
Many who are participating in the ride have been personally affected by prostate cancer. One is CEO of CS Energy and Chair of Stronger for Longer, Andrew Bills.
"2019 was a year when I became one of thousands of Australian men who are prostate cancer survivors. I am passionate about supporting research that provides men with options regarding their treatment," said Andrew.
Stronger for Longer is dedicated to supporting the most promising prostate cancer research at QUT and giving men diagnosed with prostate cancer more choice about their treatment and lifestyle options.
Research Director, Professor David Waugh, and lead researchers, Associate Professor Sally-Anne Stephensen and Dr Mohanan Moharaj are spearheading QUT's precision treatment for prostate cancer research.
The team are working to develop targeted therapies that actively seek out cancer proteins and kill the harmful cells. Further research will look at restoring traditional therapy, shrinking tumours, and increasing response.
This novel approach will provide several new drugs to help fight prostate cancer and progress treatment strategies to improve patient outcomes.
