Recent donation: 'Brisbane River' 2014 by Jun Chen
We’re excited to announce that we have recently welcomed a significant work by QUT alumnus, Jun Chen, into the QUT Art Collection.
Chen’s epic landscape work, Brisbane River 2014, provides a sweeping view of a corner of the Maiwar along which QUT stands, and where it will now live permanently, serving as an exciting resource for QUT students and staff, as well as the wider community.
After completing a Master of Fine Arts with QUT in the mid-1990s, Jun Chen has become a regular finalist in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes and is featured in both public and private collections around Australia.
Chen’s early training in brush and ink painting at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in China, along with a deep understanding of tonal subtleties, informs the distinct textured and gestural style that marks his practice. Each thick stroke of paint is applied with purpose using a palette knife, a careful study in light and spatiality that comes together to deliver a contemplative image like Brisbane River 2014.
The artwork is being donated direct from the artist, and meets a number of QUT collecting priorities, including procuring major works that assist in contextualising existing holdings, and representing the best of contemporary Australian art, including the acquisition of works by identified key QUT-trained artists.
