Update from QUT’s inaugural Indigenous Chair in Creative Industries
As a major Australian university, QUT is helping to realise a meaningful and enduring commitment to the Indigenous community in Australia.
In March 2021, the University welcomed internationally acclaimed playwright, artistic director, proud Quandamooka man and QUT outstanding alumnus Dr Wesley Enoch AM to his new position as Indigenous Chair in Creative Industries.
QUT’s aspirations for leadership in Indigenous empowerment, through the establishment of the first philanthropically endowed Indigenous Chair in Creative Industries in Australia, represents a call for all Australians to help create a better future.
Wesley shares that over the last twelve months, he’s helped Indigenous students at QUT, gathered Indigenous staff and talked about the ways forward, as well as talking to the world about what needs to change.
“Every day, I feel grateful. It’s been wonderful to see how much I have to offer to the University and using the microphone to amplify the voices of Indigenous students, staff, people, Indigenous knowledge and cultural perspectives.”
Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors, QUT can continue to support vulnerable students, develop ground-breaking research, and amplify Indigenous thought leadership.
“Donor support has helped me influence the curriculum development project where we are embedding Indigenous perspectives in the lives of every QUT student, delivering cultural awareness units and developing career pathways for Indigenous staff and academics.
“Notably, I have found a national voice in the media with regular radio, tv and press appearances.
“I see this as a vital function of my position as I seek to influence public debate and insight to Indigenous issues.”
