From industry internships to full-time employment and sitting on the boards of several non-profits, this QUT alum has done it all. As someone who wears many hats, Jade Murphy-Silver knows the importance of time management. She shares her best tips for staying on top of your time.
Time is a valuable commodity that we will never have more of, so how do we make the most of the minutes, hours and days we have? From family, friends, career and community, these are my tips for staying on top of what matters.
1. Be realistic
Do you ever agree to a deadline before checking your current commitments? Pause and reflect before responding. It doesn’t mean you have to say no, but gives you more control over others expectations and your capacity.
2. Collaborate and delegate
A problem shared is a problem halved. Take this approach to managing large or challenging projects by collaborating and delegating. This will help you better manage your time and build relationships with colleagues. Don’t forget to recognise their efforts!
3. Block out time in your calendar
Block out time for projects, professional development, and most importantly - breaks. If you lose attention easily, try using the pomodoro technique, an effective way to finish tasks without interruptions.
4. Reflect and review
Think of your time as a currency that holds priceless value. Are you tracking with whom, how, or where you are spending it? Check in monthly to see what you should stop, start, and continue doing with your schedule.
Time management is a critical soft skill for all aspects of life. I hope these four techniques help you make the most out of your time.
