Professor Mark Harvey is the Vice-President (Business Development) at QUT, a position he commenced in March this year.

In this role, Mark is responsible for providing leadership and strategic oversight of QUT’s engagement with external organisations and stakeholders. The Division’s offices, departments and entities include Advancement, Corporate Engagement, Business Development and QUT Enterprise Holdings, the holding company for QUT Bluebox and Creative Enterprise Australia.

Mark has over 20 years’ business development and industry engagement experience including senior positions in the university and finance sector. This includes the role of University of Southern Queensland’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) where he advanced the university’s research performance and reputation via driving partnerships and collaborations with industry.  

Prior to USQ, Mark spent seven years in the venture capital industry as a Partner with CM Capital Investments, one of Australia’s leading venture capital companies with over $250 million under management and, prior to this, as CEO of an early stage investment and development company. In these positions, Mark played key roles in the management of investee company’s research programs, finances, fund raising, intellectual property, and executive team recruitment. He has been on the Board of Directors of over a dozen technology companies including ASX and NASDAQ listed, and a member of the investment committee of two seed funds investing in start-up companies from The University of Queensland, The University of Melbourne and Australian National University.

Preceding his venture capital experience, Mark worked with UniQuest, the commercialisation company of The University of Queensland where he played a major role in establishing and securing funding for start-up companies, and in negotiating licensing and research agreements with various industry organisations. 

Mark commenced his career as a biomedical researcher. Following attaining a PhD in Physiology from The University of Queensland and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary in Canada, Mark was a Senior Lecturer at QUT where he obtained National Health and Medical Research Council and Queensland Cancer Fund grants to conduct research programs in cancer and developmental biology. 

Mark is currently the Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland, and a Director of Sunsuper, one of Australia’s leading superannuation funds with over $60 Billion under management.
