Women in Engineering Network

The Women in Engineering Network is a group established by female QUT engineering alumni. We aim to build a supportive network of female QUT engineering alumni and contribute to the development of both the network members and the community.

The group seeks to construct a social and professional network of female QUT engineering alumni by offering ongoing inspiration and support to help members achieve their goals. The group promotes networking, talks openly about the challenges women in engineering face, and works together to add value to the community.

Past activities

The Women in Engineering Network has hosted and organised a number of successful events since its founding in January 2013.

The network's launch event in September 2013 featured:

  • Women in Engineering Engineers Australia National Committee representative, Jo Kirby
  • former Science and Engineering Dean, Martin Betts
  • Alumni Manager for QUT, Ken Gideon
  • the network's 2013 president, Jess Kong.

There was overwhelming support from QUT faculty members and engineering alumni on the night.

In November 2013 the network held a financial planning event hosted by financial adviser, Helen Baker. The event was targeted towards female professionals in all stages of their careers and gave insights into financial independence and stability.

In conjunction with International Women's Day in March 2014, the network held a panel discussion supported by The Power of Engineering and Girls In Engineering Making Statements (GEMS). The discussion featured a diverse panel of women that included senior project managers from leading consultancies, recruitment experts and PhD candidates.

Most recently the group took the lead role in 'Networking to Win' by Robyn Henderson, a joint alumni chapter event, where graduates could learn and practice the secrets to building their own networks.

The group also works closely with The Power of Engineering high school program and GEMS, which is a QUT student run group.
