Work integrated learning

Our work integrated learning program offers internships, projects and study tours from your second year of study. Opportunities are available year-round in Australia and around the world.

Internships

Internships are advanced-level independent study units that develop your skills through workplace learning. You’ll develop your ability to work successfully within a professional creative workplace. Using reflective practice techniques to transform your professional practice, you’ll bring skills you’ve learnt at uni into a professional environment.

Internships are available from your third year of study. You'll complete 100 hours of placement with an industry organisation.

We support over 750 internships each year with organisations like Brisbane Festival, Expressions Dance Company, HASSELL Studios, Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), and Brisbane Powerhouse.

Projects

Develop your discipline specialisation through practice-based learning, working with our academics on real-world projects. You’ll gain experience working in a professional creative team to create real outcomes on interdisciplinary or discipline-based projects. Opportunities exist to partner with industry on campus or around the world.

Projects are available from your second year of study. You’ll complete around 100 hours of industry-based experience, mentored by a QUT academic. Previous projects include Beijing Dance Festival, Ars Electronica Futurelab Academy, Out of the Box Festival, and Sustainable Design Practices in Bali.

Study tours

Travel to cities in Australia and overseas and visit important global cultural precincts. Immersive study tours are designed to expose you to leading creative practices around the world, which you can then apply to your own practice.

Study tours are available from your second year of study and are usually 2–3 weeks duration. Past tours have travelled to North and South America, Europe and Asia to visit global creative hubs like New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Bollywood.
