Why choose this course?

The property sector is one of Australia's largest industries and second largest employers. And, data scientist, as an occupation, has experienced a growth of 492 per cent from 2015 to 2019 (Burning Glass Technologies, National Skills Commission Analysis, 2020). It is widely acknowledged as one of the most desirable careers, not just in Australia, but globally.

Therefore, it would stand to reason that a career combining the skills and knowledge of both a property economist and a data scientist would put you in good stead for success.

Across the world, we are collecting massive amounts of data. It’s the new currency. But that data means very little if we’re not able derive meaningful insights from it. We need skilled data scientists to create meaning with the data.

A significant and accelerating challenge for modern business is managing fast incoming, voluminous and varied data that is increasingly being relied on to make decisions in today's business environment. This course includes an entire unit addressing the emerging frameworks in modern data management.

Property economists are skilled in the ownership, management, investment, valuation and development of a range of property types. Property economists are experts in optimising the returns and performance of this specialist asset class.

Real-world learning

Real-world data science is frequently a collaborative effort, and online collaborative tools combined with open source tools for data processing and sharing are proven technologies.

You will be encouraged to become an independent learner through discussion, debate and interaction with peers and teaching staff, independent studies and self-reflection.

You will apply theoretical frameworks to real-world problems, so you can make clear connections between what is learned in the classroom, and your future practice as a data science professional.

Learning opportunities and environments include:

  • use of industry case studies and data sets
  • use of industry software applications and tools
  • use of authentic assessment tasks
  • incorporation of industry-based projects
  • opportunities to engage with industry guest speakers
  • availability of internships.

You are required to undertake 30 days of approved property economics work experience as part of your Work Integrated Learning core unit.
