QUT Advertising students, Jasmine Hurt and Jessica Pokorski, were crowned winners of the inaugural ‘Starcom Challenge’ event recently hosted in partnership with Brisbane media agency, Starcom.

Working with mentors, four teams received a real-world brief and pitched their media strategy and recommendations shark-tank style to a panel of judges.

Coordinating the challenge on behalf of the media agency, Alumna, Sarah Stone said “the students only had one day to work on and finalise a pitch. Everyone in the Starcom team was very impressed with the quality of the pitches that the students presented, particularly with the short amount of time they had to prepare.”

The first of its type hosted by a media agency with QUT School of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations, the event built on an existing relationship to give students the opportunity to work within an agency for a day and provide an opportunity to build and nurture young talent.

Advertising and IMC Subject Area Coordinator, Dr Louise Kelly, said the event was designed to provide students with the opportunity for some hands on experience in a media agency with real world mentors, along with the challenges that come with working in teams and creating ideas under pressure.

QUT student co-winner, Jasmine Hurt said the experience gave her a great insight to working in the media industry.

“Somehow this experience helped to solidify the difference between advertising theory which we use in university assessment, and advertising campaigns in the real world,” Jasmine said.

Jessica agreed adding “we experienced a concentrated insight into the intensive, creative and fun environment in the media industry. Starcom supported us and through their involvement I could easily picture this as a place where I would wake up and look forward to going to work.”

Starcom General Manager Caleb Watson said the Starcom Challenge was such a success it will now become an annual event.
