Mike Smith, Chief Executive Officer, Australia and New Zealand Group Limited (ANZ), will address the second QUT Business Leaders' Forum for 2012, to be held on Tuesday, May 8 at the Hilton Brisbane.

As we move through a second and more protracted phase of the global financial crisis, the world is undergoing painful adjustments as governments in Europe and the US, and Western consumers deal with a massive debt burden. Banks, like many other sectors of the economy, are also undergoing fundamental change. This involves adapting to a new environment of lower credit growth, higher funding costs, rapid change in technology and much greater regulation. At the same time, the once in a century shift in the global economic and political order towards Asia is creating significant opportunities for Australia and for Australian business.

Mike Smith will give us his views on the state of the world economy, the opportunities we have as part of the Asian Century, and what this means for the future of Australia, for Queensland and for Australian business including ANZ.

Before taking up the role of ANZ CEO in 2007, Mike Smith was CEO of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, Chairman Hang Seng Bank and Global Head of Banking for the HSBC Group. He is Chairman of the Australian Bankers' Association, a member of the Business Council of Australia and a Director of the Institute of International Finance.

One of Australia's leading journalists, Kerry O'Brien, will once again be our moderator.
