Business School a university for the real world

02 February 2019

Entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, visionaries and change-makers are being sought for next year’s MIT Innovation and Entrepreneurship Bootcamp: Innovation Everywhere to be held at QUT.

QUT, in partnership with the Queensland Government and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - one of the world’s leading universities - will host the Bootcamp for a third successive year.

The theme for 2019’s MIT Innovation and Entrepreneurship Bootcamp - is Innovation Everywhere.

The highly selective camp condenses several MIT courses into an action-based learning experience, delivered by internationally renowned speakers, designed for budding entrepreneurs from across the world.

Participants work in teams to identify opportunities ready for innovation, which may be a result of technological change and development, changes in markets or social, economic or environmental problems.

QUT Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Margaret Sheil AO said the university was proud to host another Bootcamp.

Professor Sheil said the week-long event solidified QUT’s ongoing partnership with MIT Bootcamps and Advance Queensland to boost Queensland’s innovation ecosystem.

“MIT Bootcamp offers a new form of learning that focuses on developing entrepreneurial excellence for successful careers of the future,” Professor Sheil said.

Professor Rowena Barrett, Head of the School of Management at QUT, said in disruptive business environments, increasingly larger businesses employ “intrapreneurs” to help develop new processes, products, ideas to ensure their relevance and future.

She said past Queensland-based teams continued to work on their ideas including CareMate, a dementia-based platform for carers.

“Other MIT Bootcamp Brisbane-based alumni are pushing on and developing their innovative entrepreneurial ventures such as Nyree McKenzie’s Bidhive and Rick Martin’s Equal Reality,” she said.

Tuition costs for the 2019 course are US$6,500.

Advance Queensland and QUT will offer three full scholarships to Queensland residents to participate, with one reserved for a person of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island heritage.

Similar to previous years, MIT Bootcamps candidates shortlisted for scholarships need to show demonstrated impact in their work and vision for the future.

MIT Bootcamp recommends applicants complete entrepreneurship MOOCs ahead of the start of the program.
