Business School a university for the real world

07 February 2020

The School of Economics and Finance invites you to attend a seminar where Associate Professor Mikael Elinder from the Department of Economics at Uppsala University, Sweden will present on “Smart and Generous”.

In this paper, we investigate the relationship between intelligence (a military enlistment test of cognitive ability) and pro-social behavior (charitable giving) using register data from Sweden. We contribute to the literature in several ways. First, we show that a positive, and monotonic, relationship between cognitive ability and charitable giving, exists in a large representative sample of Swedish males. Second, by using within family and twin variation in intelligence, we rule out that the positive association could be explained by several potential confounders such as family or social background. Third, by controlling for potential mediators, such as income, education and family variables, we show that only a minor part of the effect is channeled through these mediators, suggesting that the direct effect is strong. These findings support theories suggesting that highly developed cognitive abilities are essential for pro-social behavior.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
