It is often said in fundraising that many small donations combine for maximum impact. The QUT Staff Community Welfare Fund is a wonderful example of the truth of this statement.

Every fortnight, more than 80 QUT staff members each make a donation from their salary to support community projects in the Brisbane area. These funds are pooled and collected through the year to be disbursed to a selection on programs that apply for funding.

Nundah Community Enterprises cooperative was one of the successful grant applicants this year and received $2,000 toward the construction of a carport for a food trailer. “We are a small enterprise co-op, with a focus on ensuring people with disabilities have opportunities for meaningful employment in an environment where they feel supported and valued”, said Enterprise Coordinator Mr Richard Warner. “This donation might seem small, but for the people we are helping it makes a world of difference. Thank you to all those staff members who contribute to the Fund.”

At the Cheque Presentation Ceremony this year, QUT Chancellor Mr Tim Fairfax AC, presented 12 organisations with their donations, disbursing more than $18,000. Since its inception 25 years ago QUT staff have contributed more than $400,000 to the community through this fund!

The Staff Community Welfare Fund is part of a much bigger staff giving program at QUT, with more than 700 staff making donations to support scholarships, medical and environmental research and the broader community.

“Culture is integral to a happy workplace, and at QUT the culture of giving and supporting each other is really strong”, said QUT Director of Finance and Resource Planning, Mr Graham Fryer. “Our Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor are great advocates for staff giving, and it is a real testament to the heart of QUT that more than 16 per cent of our staff make philanthropic donations to support our students and community every fortnight.”

QUT staff who would like sign up to the staff giving program can do so online, or contact Inge Iosif (inge.iosif@qut.edu.au) for more information.

If you are a registered charity in the Brisbane local area, and would like more information about the grant application, please contact Jennifer Bezett at jennifer.bezett@qut.edu.au.
