Each year, Brisbane Festival handpicks a selection of independent productions to be showcased at the Theatre Republic hub, presented at the QUT Kelvin Grove’s Creative Industries Precinct.
Designed by QUT Creative Industries alumnus Sarah Winter, Theatre Republic will be a space for discovery, creativity, engagement and joy, inviting the public to contribute to the space and interact with artists, activities and their surroundings.
In 2017, an enviable line up of award-winning international and home-grown performers will be presenting two world premieres, three Australian premieres and seven Queensland premieres in the space.
“With its focus on independent productions, the Theatre Republic program this year again includes some shows created by companies or featuring performers who graduated from QUT. We’re excited that these shows are part of the outstanding program of local, national and international events at the Brisbane Festival this year,” QUT Vice Chancellor, Professor Peter Coaldrake said.
Brisbane Festival Producer and QUT alumnus Alex Butt is excited to see the campus getting involved with these initiatives.
“Coming back to work at the Creative Industries Precinct at Kelvin Grove for Brisbane Festival is a tad surreal – I honed my craft as actor in The Loft and I’m now bringing cutting-edge international works to the venue as a producer,” Alex said.
“The Theatre Republic program is riddled with QUT grads who have adapted their skills and continued to forge a career in the industry due to the entrepreneurial spirit that the QUT Creative Industries courses instil in its students.”
Program highlights that showcase the QUT community include I Just Came to Say Goodbye from Brisbane’s The Good Room – the anticipated ‘forgiveness’ chapter of the company’s trilogy of original works, and Two Guys In A Box – a world premiere from the Dog Spoon theatre company.
“It’s wonderful to be working with so many industry professionals who I studied with at QUT and I’m glad those relationships are still bearing fruit today,” Alex said.
Theatre Republic opens Wednesday 13 September 2017. It will be open daily from 6pm until 30 September 2017. For more information, visit the Theatre Republic website: http://www.brisbanefestival.com.au/theatre-republic
