Professor Sheel Nuna

Biography
Professor Nuna has an Undergraduate Degree in Biology, Post-graduate Degree in Geography (Regional Development) and Doctoral Degree in Political Studies. His research writings has been in the domain of education, gender and development
Professor Nuna works as Director - South Asia with the key responsibility of developing research partnerships for QUT in south Asian countries. He has conceived a number of research projects that received funding from Australian and Indian Government agencies.
Before joining QUT, he worked for the Australian High Commission in New Delhi (1997-2007) and played a significant role in developing bilateral relationship between India and Australia in education, science and technology.
In his early career, Professor Nuna worked at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration and has many achievements to his credit. He for the first time identified backward districts in terms of education as well as women’s social well-being. He has written extensively on education, gender and development interface. His work on abortion in India highlighted the magnitude of illegal abortions in India and that resulted in many policy changes. He was closely associated with the development of India’s National Policy on Education 1986 and 1991.
His doctoral work on voting behaviour established the relationship between voting behaviour and plurality of India and demonstrated the operation of centripetal and centrifugal forces in Indian polity. He measured the swings in voting for the first time in India.
