Biography
Matt Hsu is 2020 Queensland Music Award winning musician, composer, multi-instrumentalist. His doctoral project ‘Indie-Folk™: vintage ethos in the 21st century’ investigates the intersection of old-world sensibilities and modernity, artistic authenticity and hipster culture. As an extension of this research, Matt participated in the Three Minute Thesis competition in 2016, winning the QUT Creative Industries round, and becoming a QUT 3MT finalist. Matt has performed at TEDxQUT 2018 and BIGSOUND 2017 with his multi-instrumental solo project Matt Hsu's Obscure Orchestra. Playing over 30 instruments from around the world including trumpet, double bass, clarinet, accordion, shakuhachi and found objects, he creates evocative and wholly organic sounds that explore the grey areas between cultures. This project has also received Official Selection status at numerous international film festivals, including Finalist at Los Angeles Cinefest 2017 and Semi-finalist at Austrian Film Festival 2018. As a founding member of The Mouldy Lovers, Matt has played festivals such as Falls Festival, Queensland Music Festival, Brisbane Festival and Woodford Folk Festival and toured Japan. Their music has been featured on Triple J and Rage.Personal details
