Mr Michael Murray

BiographyMichael is an insolvency law specialist with a long history of practice, professional work and writing and commentating in that and related fields. He is presently an Adjunct Professor at QUT Law School, working with Professor Rosalind Mason, where he gives advice on research and law reform projects to staff and students. He is also involved with the Business School in its economic perspective on aspects of insolvency and business conduct. His other roles include
- co-author of Keay's Insolvency (with Professor Jason Harris), 10th ed, 2018, Thomson Reuters;
- an editor of the Insolvency Law Journal, Thomson Reuters;
- legal commentator through Murrays Legal Commentary - www.murrayslegal.com.au
- nominee of the Attorney-General on bankruptcy registration and disciplines committees under the Bankruptcy Act.
In 2014, Michael was made a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law and in 2017 was elected a director of the Academy.
Michael's areas of academic and practice interest include personal insolvency, director duties and conduct, practitioner duties and regulation, the roles of regulators, banking regulation, and the use of technology in insolvency. He also maintains an interest in crime and aspects of criminology.
He is presently studying for an LLM by research at UTS into the role of the insolvency practitioner.
He was formerly the legal director of ARITA, the professional body of liquidators and trustees (2007-2016); a lawyer with the Australian Government Solicitor (1989-2007); a solicitor assisting on the HIH Royal Commission (2001-2003); and a government appointed member of the Corporations and Markets Advisory Committee (CAMAC) (2011-2014).
Michael has a Bachelor of Laws (Sydney) and a Diploma in Criminology (Sydney, McClemens Prize).

He teaches as a guest lecturer at UTS and the University of Sydney to insolvency undergraduate students.
He regularly given presentations and workshops to insolvency practitioners and lawyers, here an internationally.
He gives guidance and assistance to students at QUT, and other students as referred, from undergraduate through to PhD level.
He has also appeared to give evidence before several parliamentary inquiries.
